Last Sunday Indiana has finally joined the ranks of states that officially get its sports betting industry running. It may be latest, but it won’t be the last as the sports gambling industry is here to stay.
Three casinos have started sportsbook operators in the Hoosier State after receiving approval by the Indiana Gaming Commission (IGC): Ameristar Casino in East Chicago, Hollywood Casino in Lawrenceburg, and Indiana Grand Racing & Casino in Shelbyville. Governor Eric Holcomb placed one of the first wagers in the state, even though it was a paltry $10 at first. He got into it with two more $10 bets.
Shortly some more operators went in action including Horseshoe Hammond and French Lick Resort. Ten casinos and three off-track venues will ultimately become part of the system.
The Governor led the pack of supporters with his approval of sports gambling legislation in May. This action was followed by IGC starting the licensing process in July. Licensing fees are reasonable for obtaining the gambling license, the initial fee is $100,000 and an annual payment of $50,000 is needed to renew the license. The operators must give up 9.5% of gross revenue to Uncle Sam’s taxman.
Indiana has a sports gambling framework that is more robust than some other states. Can place bets on all major league activity and professional sports like golf, soccer, tennis, darts, and others are allowed. Though, in contrast to some states, Indiana allows wagers on college sports. High school and amateur sports contests are banned.
Everyone at the Indiana Grand was thrilled to see the governor come to help inaugurate the budding sportsbook.
